In November 1965, New York was blacked out by an electricity failure. The authorities prom

ised that it would not happen again. Pessimists were certain that it would occur again within five years at the latest. In July 1977, there was a repeat performance which produced varying degrees of chaos throughout the city of eight million people. The freezing Northeast hasn’t been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter, so

when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota, Florida, my bags were packed before you could say “sunshine”. I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C(维生素C), thinking of beaches and orange trees. The history of English is conventionally, if perhaps too neatly, divided into three pe
